Reflections on Caring: Family Video Leads the Way in Resident Centred Care
In January 2005, family members of six residents living at Rideaucrest Home developed a 45-minute video entitled “Family Reflections on Caring”. The video depicts 2 husbands, 3 daughters and 1 son in unrehearsed and unscripted conversation, sharing their wishes, concerns and priorities regarding the care of their loved one. They respond to questions such as “What is most important for quality of life for your loved one?” and “What is it like for you to have your loved one living here?”
The development of this project was quite simple…with the use of a hand-held camcorder, a tripod, VHS tapes, the project leader’s volunteered time and the time of the family participants, this video has provided the opportunity for family members to not only have a voice, but for staff at the home to understand these family members better. The “Reflections on Caring” video has also been integrated into Rideaucrest’s compulsory two-day Resident Centred Care course and has been viewed by the home’s Family Council and other staff for viewing on their units.
The overall message is loud and clear. As one family member put it “Just because someone can’t talk or carry on a conversation anymore doesn’t mean they’re not there. My mother is still the same person she always was…The essence of that person is still there.”

City of Ottawa - Long Term Care
Ethical Decision Making Framework
The Ethical Decision Making Framework resulted from the need to refresh an existing framework that was seldom being used by front-line staff at the City’s four long term care homes.
Every staff member was provided with a laminated business card-size copy of the decision framework. This framework gives a reference and approach to identifying any problem in the workplace and working through it with residents, staff, families and volunteers to resolve the issue. Staff can self-identify any issues of concern and use the model to work through the process. It also empowers them to use the framework without senior management or supervisory intervention.
There are other prompts within the framework to help staff think about who needs to be involved and to help them determine the level of ethical concern. The framework is not in and of itself unique. What is unique is the way in which it has become a part of the organizational culture in the homes of the City of Ottawa. This program is innovative because it demystifies the concept of ethics.
The framework represents a means by which staff can demonstrate how they live the LTC Branch's Mission, Vision and Values. With the mission and vision as their goal, they use the framework to respond to everyday issues and concerns of varying degrees of ethical concern, all the while guided by the core values.
