Recipient - 2006 Innovation & Excellence Award - "Supporting Seniors" Category

Providence Manor
"Safety Assurance Program for Power Mobility Devices"

The Safety Assurance Program for Power Mobility Devices was developed to maximize independent community mobility for the residents of Providence Manor while minimizing the risk of harm. It consists of four components that are joined together by a procedural algorithm:

1. Staff monitoring for safe and unsafe resident driving practices
2. Training for residents who exhibit unsafe driving techniques
3. Power mobility driving test administered by an Occupational Therapist
4. Appeal process for residents who do not successfully pass the driving test

The driving test was developed at Providence Manor and was based on guidelines from the Ontario Assistive Devices Program and the University of British Colombia. The algorithm was also designed by Providence Manor and is a simple tool used to monitor resident driving history and to assist staff in decision making regarding training, testing and appeals measures.

The program has served to assist residents to safely drive their power mobility devices and has provided a fair and due process for dealing with unsafe driving practices. Providence Manor has noticed a dramatic drop in the number of repeat incidents since implementation in late 2005.

Recipient - 2006 Innovation & Excellence Award - "Workplace Quality" Category

Unionville Home Society
"Living the Core Values"

The Organizational Renewal Team at Unionville Home Society (UHS), consisting of family members, residents, the majority of employee job classifications, volunteers, board directors and external partners strongly believed that a quality workplace promotes an environment of respect.

To achieve this a comprehensive, integrated program was developed to ensure the organization's core values were the guiding principles for everyday employee interactions with residents, families, fellow staff members and UHS community partners.

To make the program come alive for staff, the core values were expanded to include a value statement and three key behaviours to guide interactions and decision-making. The result was that core values had more meaning and staff better understood the actions which demonstrated each core value. The core values with the expected standards of behaviour were added to the performance management system and senior managers communicated their commitment to these values and behaviours by signing a document which is displayed for all staff to view. The program has been integrated into the staff recruitment process with employment ads and interview questions incorporating the core values of the home.

UHS's commitment to "living the core values" has resulted in enhanced quality of care and services for residents, increased employee satisfaction, improved communications and a healthier and more productive work environment.
