CONCURRENT WORKSHOP 6
WEDNESDAY, MAY 14 - 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Guest House: A Home Away from Home
(Integration and Collaboration)
The Guest House is an overnight, 12-bed respite bungalow designed to create a safe, homelike and supportive environment for individuals in the early to mid-stages of dementia. This oasis offers families a much-needed break from the stresses of caring for a loved one with dementia for a few hours a day up to 90 days a year. Respite often prevents burnout and premature placement into long term care. Hear how the Guest House came to be, including the research and planning, physical environment, program philosophy, staffing model and the grand opening in March 2007.
Objectives:
Learn about the issues and needs of caregivers of people in the early to moderate stages of dementia and the importance of respite.
Discuss how an appropriate setting and generic staffing has enhanced the respite experience for those with dementia.
Hear a caregiver's personal experience and the impact the Guest House has had on care giving.
Allyn Heyes is a registered nurse and employee of Carefor Health and Community Services in Ottawa. With 28 years of experience in long term care, she currently manages an adult day program and the Guest House.
Marg Eisner, RN, is the director, Programs and Services at the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County. Prior to this she was the manager of the health and life sciences sector at Algonquin College. She is currently chair of the Ottawa Community Support Coalition.
