Employee injuries related to resident handling are alarmingly common. These incidents can also result in pain and suffering for the resident and adversely affect an employer’s financial and human resources. Learn about resident handling technologies, evidence-based research and leading practices to help you improve your resident handling program.
Objectives:
Identify the workplace trends that have an impact on resident handling injuries in the long term care and community sectors.
Understand the legislative requirements and review the fundamental components of an effective resident handling program, including evaluation and quality improvement.
Learn how to optimize your program based on your evaluation findings, current research and leading practices.
Frances Ziesmann is a registered physiotherapist and a consultant for the Ontario Safety Association for Community Healthcare in the Hamilton-Niagara region. A major focus of her work over the past 17 years has been on health and safety program development and musculoskeletal injury prevention, including client/resident handling programs, ergonomics and return to work programs.
Carolyn James is a registered physiotherapist with a master’s degree from the University of Western Ontario. She has 20 years of experience in the field of work-related injuries.
