What Do You Mean Our CEO is Leaving?

Most board members shudder at the thought of losing their CEO. But is it possible to plan for that eventuality? Understand why CEOs leave, lessons boards have learned in managing the CEO relationship, why succession planning matters and tactics for retaining competent leaders. Benchmarking data on the topic of succession as well as planning strategies will also be discussed.

Objectives:

• Get suggestions for refining your board’s monitoring process regarding succession.

• Understand key factors for a successful CEO transition.

• Review the results of a 2007 study that revealed the top reasons CEOs are leaving the not-for-profit organizations they have been serving.

• Share lessons learned in managing the board/CEO relationship.
