ALC: Is There Any Solution in Sight?
(Governance and Leadership)
The ability to transfer individuals who are designated as alternate levels of care (ALC) patients in Ontario’s hospitals is a serious and complex issue that is posing significant challenges for the health care system. The pressure to arrive at a solution that respects consumer autonomy and choice, delivers high quality care and ensures effective and appropriate allocation of resources is considerable. It is proving to be almost insurmountable with long term care homes at full capacity and few alternative settings to accommodate the needs of those patients. What is the scope of the problem from the hospital perspective and what approaches are being considered by government, LHINs and health care providers to resolve pressures in different communities?
A panel of health care and government representatives will reflect on what is being considered with regards to accommodating the growing number of ALC patients in the system. Delegates will also have an opportunity to comment on their local experiences and the role they see for long term care in the future.
Lou Reidel is the director of Health Research and Finance for the Ontario Hospital Association.
Tim Burns is the director of the Performance Improvement and Compliance Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long- Term Care.
Other panel members to be confirmed.
