Strengthening the Ties That Bind – Family and Staff Working Together
(Integration and Collaboration)
Families are an extension of residents in long term care homes. Supporting them and maintaining a positive relationship continues to be very important for staff. This session will examine successful approaches and models of support for families, including the family council.
Objectives:
Brainstorm on challenges with staff and family/family council relationships.
Understand the role of the family council and its support to families and homes.
Identify strategies for effective relationships with families and family councils.
Diane Sheldon is a registered nurse with more than 39 years of experience in the hospital, long term care and community health care sectors. She is a volunteer and Family Council chair at Malden Park, chair of Erie St. Clair, LHIN 1 Regional Family Council Network and a member of the Ontario Network of Regional Family Councils.
Shawn Souder has 18 years of combined management and clinical experience in mental health, concentrating his clinical practice in the field of geriatric psychiatry in both hospital and community settings.
Brenda Schulze, RN, BScN, CNC(G), is the site administrator/ director of resident care at Georgian Manor in Penetanguishene.
