Certification Training Programs

Overview:

Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requires that employers establish a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) in any workplace with 20 or more workers, or workplaces of any size where a designated substance is in use. If your workplace requires a JHSC, you must have at least two Certified Members on your Committee – one representing the employer and one representing workers.

To become “Certified”, JHSC members must complete both Part 1 – Basic Certification and Part 2 – Workplace Specific Hazard Training.

Part 1 – Basic Certification Training

Comp Advantage Inc has been a WSIB-approved provider of Basic Certification Training since 1997. Our participants achieve a very high pass rate on the WSIB Basic Certification exam, and we offer retraining at no extra cost for the few who are required to answer supplemental questions.

As well as being the required first step in the process of becoming a Certified Member of a JHSC, Basic Certification is an excellent foundation course in health and safety for supervisors, managers and anyone interested in learning more about Ontario’s health and safety legislation.

Our two-day classroom session gives you the opportunity to discuss health and safety challenges and solutions with participants from other workplaces. The cost of $325 + GST, a total of $344.50 per participant includes a comprehensive course manual, a copy of the OHSA and completion of the WSIB Basic Certification exam, as well as morning and afternoon refreshments each day.

Part 2 – Workplace Specific Hazard Training

The first step in Part 2 of the Certification training process is for the employer to complete a workplace hazard assessment aimed at determining the “significant” hazards in the workplace.

Once the significant hazards have been identified, the training needed to assess and control these hazards must be defined and at least two designated members of the JHSC, one employer representative and one "worker" representative, must complete the training in order to become Certified Members.
