OANHSS
is a provincial, non-profit
 organization representing
long term care homes, seniors
 housing, and community agencies
that provide care and services on a
 not-for-profit basis. There are over
 575 members in total which
 includes commercial suppliers,
 associate and individual members.

The Association was founded in 1919 as an association for managers and matrons of the aged and infirm. Today our mission is to represent and support our members in providing a continuum of quality not-for-profit long term care, seniors’ community services and housing.

Members are located throughout the province. They may be stand alone projects or part of a continuum of care or “campus” setting that could include a range of services such as long term facility care, independent living apartments, and support service programs.

The Association operates independent of government and funding comes primarily from member fees and revenue generated through programs and services.

Statement of Values

The Ontario Association of Non-Profit Homes and Services for Seniors believes in:

Membership Categories

There are five broad categories of membership. Together these total over 585 organizational and individual members.

FULL MEMBERS are the core, voting members of the Association. Groups qualifying for this category must operate on a not-for-profit basis and provide direct services to seniors. Full membership is organizational which means that all those associated with the organization which has joined (eg. staff, board, volunteers, consumers) can take advantage of OANHSS products and services.

Members in this category include:

A special developing member category also exists for organizations that are just getting underway and are not yet incorporated or serving clients. These groups receive all the benefits of full membership with the exception of a vote.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS are generally groups and organizations that are involved in long-term care, but do not provide direct service. They include allied professional and provider associations, government offices, educational facilities, and agency head offices.

COMMERCIAL MEMBERS offer products and services to the long term care sector and through their involvement provide valuable financial support to the Association.

The PERSONAL MEMBER category is for individuals with an interest in the long term care sector.

HONOURARY MEMBERS are individuals who are granted lifetime membership for their dedication to seniors and their contributions to the Association.

Value of Membership

Member needs drive the work of the Association. Within our core activity areas we focus on taking action, delivering solutions, and sharing results.

Political Advocacy
This is the most critical activity of the Association. We are well recognized as a key organization in Ontario that represents non-profit long term care perspectives and values, and advocates for non-profit care and service delivery.

Key activities include:

Communications
We strive to make maximum use of current technologies such as email and the Internet in order to gather and disseminate information that is important and relevant.

We also guarantee a regular flow of information to members through our newsletters (Action Update, Housing News) and monthly mailing package. Full members also receive Executive Report, a frequent communication from the CEO on emerging issues.

Member Services
PREFERRED PRICING PROGRAMS - using our collective buying power we have negotiated discount pricing and preferred service arrangements for the products and services members use most. From customized employee benefits programs, to telecommunications, to natural gas direct purchase, our programs deliver superior quality and substantial savings.
OANHSS ON-LINE - www.oanhss.org offers quick access to information, reports, and updates on sector and Association activities.
OTHER SERVICES - include our Marketplace employment service, annual member awards program, sector-specific publications, and an annual Membership Directory and Supplier Guide.

Education
Our well-rounded education program offers members professional training, growth, and career development. Major events include the annual Convention, one-day seminars, and our highly successful Administrators Certification Program which is recognized by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Governance/Board of Directors

The Association is governed by a fifteen member Board of Directors which includes nine regional representatives elected by the membership in each region, three sector members elected by the entire membership (charitable, municipal, housing), two members-at-large elected by the entire membership; and a Past Board Chair.

Committees, Advisory Groups, Task Forces

The Association relies heavily on the involvement of individual members to help accomplish its organizational goals. Members actively participate on standing committees, advisory groups, task forces, and ad hoc meetings on specific issues.

Member expertise and advice are sought on political, operational, and management issues impacting on long term care. Member input is also critical to ensuring Association programs and services are meeting their needs. On an annual basis members are solicited to determine their interest in actively contributing to the work of the Association.

Regional Structure/Map

In addition to our provincial focus, we offer members an opportunity to actively participate in OANHSS activities at the local level. The Association consists of nine geographic regions, which together span the entire province. Each region elects its own Chair, has its own executive and operating bylaws, and varies in terms of the number and type of meetings that are held. The regional perspective is brought to the OANHSS Board of Directors through nine elected district representatives.
