Liberals Make Important Commitment to Long Term Care

Toronto, Ontario (May 11, 2004) – Today’s provincial announcement of a strategy for reform and increased funding for long term care is an important commitment that will go a long way to addressing the serious shortfalls in the system.

“We are delighted,” said Donna Rubin, CEO of the Ontario Association of Non-Profit Homes and Services for Seniors (OANHSS). “We have been advocating for adequate funding for years, and today we are gratified to see that this government is now taking action.

“We are pleased the government is pursuing a number of initiatives that we recommended, and that there will be recognition of facilities that are performing well.”

Of the total funding increase, $191 million a year will be applied to the operating budgets of existing homes, and $340 million a year will be used to operate new long term care beds that have been added to the system.

“The not-for-profit homes in the province would like to thank the Minister,” Rubin added. “We await further details, but our initial impression is that this is a significant win for the frail elderly. The increased funding should result in a higher level of care and an improved quality of life for residents.”

OANHSS is the provincial association representing not-for-profit providers of long term care, services and housing for seniors. Its member facilities operate over 26,000 long term care beds and more than 5,000 seniors' housing units in Ontario.
