Provincial Investment Benefits Seniors in the Community

Toronto, Ontario (July 7, 2004) – The Ontario government has taken an important step in supporting seniors living in the community by investing an additional $29.2 million for community support and supportive housing services.

“We are extremely pleased the government followed through so quickly on their commitment to increase funding for programs that provide seniors with the supports they need to live independently for as long as possible”, said Donna Rubin, CEO of the Ontario Association of Non-Profit Homes and Services for Seniors. “This is very good news for organizations that provide valuable services such as supportive housing, adult day programs, meal programs and transportations services,” Rubin added.

OANHSS has long advocated that improving the long term care system must include investments in home and community care to ensure the sustainability of the entire continuum.

This investment is an excellent complement to the government’s announcement earlier this week of $73.2 million for home care and their commitment to increasing operating funding for long term care facilities.

“You can’t ‘fix’ one part of the system in isolation”, noted Rubin. “These announcements are important recognition that the broad network of services that are part of Ontario’s long term care system must be adequately funded so that seniors in our province can receive the support they need to live in the comfort of their own homes and their own communities.”

OANHSS is the provincial association representing not-for-profit providers of long term care, services and housing for seniors. Its member facilities operate over 26,000 long term care beds and more than 5,000 seniors' housing units in Ontario.
